History of department The history of the department originated in 50’s, when preparation of specialists of the oldest and necessary profession for country-civil engineer was made on the basis of Kazakh Mining and Metallurgical and then Kazakh Polytechnical Institute named after V.J. Lenin. During the long history of the department it has made huge contribution to the preparation of highly qualified civil engineers for Kazakhstan. Here are some facts of the department characterizing basic stages of its formation and development. In 1957 – the first students were enrolled on the speciality «Industrial and Civil Construction» to the Kazakh Mining and Metallurgical Institute. In 1959 – the first department of "construction” was organized under the supervision of B.S Zharmagambetov. In 1961 –Civil Engineering and Construction department was separated from Mining Department. In 1964 Part Time department was opened. In 1962 – the first graduation of civil engineers took place. Graduation papers of A.T. Aubakirov and I.J. Nemchinov were recognised as the best ones. Later these graduates became scientists and doctors of technical sciences. Among the 18 people who successfully defended their thesis are many scientists, teachers and enterprise employees T.Zh. Akberdin, M.M. Sabalakov, M.A. Ashimbaev, A.A. Bespayev, A.S. Tatygulov, P.V. Korolkov and etc. Graduation papers were supervised by the professors of the department and leading experts of Designing Institutes. In 1963 – Specialisation «Heat and Gas Supply, Ventilation» was opened at the construction department. At this time the department became one of the leading departments at KazPTI. At the year of its existence the department took the second place in the competition of amateur performances «Spring in Polytechnical Institute», and «Theatre of Various Miniatures» of civil engineer was organised. Then in half year later it became a basis of «Theatre of Various Miniatures of Polytechnics». Many times civil engineers used to be champions of Sports days in KazPTI and later in AASI. Training of specialists of industrial and civil construction at the department was conducted in 1980 during the formation of Almaty Institute of Architecture and Construction. But in 1988–1990 were opened two new specialities. «Economics and organisation of construction» which were transformed further into the economic department and « lift-and-carry motions, itinerary machines» were opened. Such specialities as «Town-planning and Economy», «Mechanisation and Automatization of Construction», «Defence in emergency situations»were opened in1995–1997. More than two hundred specialists of construction graduate annually from the academy. There are 1251 students on the department: 709 are the full-time students, 542 are part-time students.
Educational activities. Nowadays there are Bachelor’s degrees students are trained on speciality "Civil engineering” and it has following specializations:
Structural calculations and designing of buildings;
Industrial and civil engineering methods;
Cooperation with enterprises. The department has close contacts with leading construction companies of the Republic: like «Basis», «Kuat», «Almaty Kurylys», «Almaty Gorstroy» and has branches in following organisations: «Imstalcon» (TPB), «Almatymonolitstroy» (TPB), KazNIISSA (BC), Injstroy (MAC), Branches of specialisation are opened in «Imstalcon», «Almaty — Monolitstroy» which expand opportunities of organisation of students practical training and carry out joint educational, methodical and scientific researches. Specialisations of the department use widely their opportunities at the KazNIISSA branch for the arrangement of educational and industrial training of students and scientific researches of post-graduate students. Such computer programs as «Lyre», «Mirage», «Autocard», «Skad», «Package», «Rama» are widely used in educational process. Laboratory works are carried out and mechanical systems are investigated, modelling of power systems are carried with the help of the program Matlab; M-files for computer calculation of course projects are developed. Teaching staff Nowadays 32 employees work at the department. There are 4 academic and 16 associate professors, 6 assistant professors, two laboratory assistants and two office-managers. The scientific potential of department consists of 4 Doctors of Technical Sciences, 17 Candidates of Technical Sciences. The two doctoral thesis and four PhD thesis were defended in 2006–10.

Methodical work. The primary tasks of methodical work are: development of the organisation of educational process, its intensification, increase of efficiency of preparation of highly skilled, competitive experts. Functions of methodical council of the department and work of teaching staff: BR>
the analysis and generalisation of pedagogical experience of leading teachers of the department, working out of recommendations about introduction of new technologies of training, improvement of methodic of carrying out of all kinds of studies, use of computer techniques and other means of training, the analysis of their efficiency;
discussion and recommendations to the edition of manuals and methodical literature which were developed by teachers, and also materials on improvement of office hours and hand-outs, video presentations.
The department staff helds scientific-methodical work:
leading teachers of the department are authors of GOSO which was developed in 2004 and 2006, which become obligatory for all high schools which are carrying out preparation on building specialities. The curriculum on subjects of a speciality «Civil engineering» are developed at the department;

teaching staff participates in introduction of modern educational technologies: video presentations, methodical seminars under the direction of the academic professors, the scientific seminars organised by professorate of the department or with participation of invited scientists;
take part in organization of provision of methodical part of practice, course and diploma projects;
develops business cooperation with the enterprises, the organisations, establishments on training of experts. In particular, branches of KazGASA on the basis of KazNIISSA, КАZGОR, Imstalkon, SERT are established;
participates in methodical conferences of academy – „Art of the state“ where problems of credit technology of training, the contents of curriculums, teaching with use of a modern information technology (Rower Roint, the Base 10, Lyre 9.2, АutоСАD) are considered;
holds annual international conference „Theoretical and experimental researches of building structures“ on the basis of the department where problems about building designs, the building mechanics, technology of building manufacture and building materials, building cars and mechanisms, an electrical supply and economy in civil engineering are discussed. Annual student’s conference on a theme „Students and a science: view to the future“is held.
test questions and tasks for all subjects of building specialities for exams, ratings, and also for certification of graduates of high schools are worked out, which is held by the Ministry of Education and Science KZ;
Annually the bibliography is completed by update literature, taking into account the scientific-methodical literature in the field of new modern technologies;
takes part in reviewing of the educational and methodical literature, carrying out job fair, creation of innovative curriculums which satisfy international requirements, arrangement of practice involving the councils of customers and a commission of experts at KazGASA (IEC).
Master’s degree. In 2003г at the department was opened the master’s degree on a speciality 6M072900 »Civil Engineering". Nowadays there are 20 students are trained in 2 years and 1 year course of master’s degree. After graduating they are awarded Master’s of a civil engineering.
Research work. The basic directions of scientific research of the department are: Probability methods of calculation and reliability of constructions (headed by academic professors Kuzyutin A.D.); perfection of numerical methods of calculation of buildings and constructions (headed by academic professor Ter-Emmanuiljan T.N.); non-linear fluctuations of cable roofs, research of waves in multi-storied buildings (headed by associate professor Bubnovich E.V.); constructive decisions of the precast, collapsible and store housing metal awning constructions, research of stressed and strained conditions of thin walled constructions (headed by academic professor Baitursunov D.M.); processing of thermoactive sheating for winter concreting, (headed by academic professor Abishev A.K.); technological and methodical basis of perfection of construction of pipelines (headed by associate professor Kashkinbaev J.Z.); designing of underground parts of constructions, retaining walls, research of stability of slopes of ground massives, designing of basis and foundations of constructions (headed by associate professor Homyakov V.A.); research and processing of optimal variants of the basis and foundations on alluvial soils (headed by associate professor Ospanov S.O.); participation in the program of the United Nations on the international strategy of reduction of natural disasters (headed by associate professor Besimbaev E.T.) etc. In additions the researches on dynamics of working processes of excavating machines are carried out (headed by academic professors Maulenov Zh.K.) tractive and coupled properties of pluriaxial running system of building machines (headed by associate professor Burtsev V.V.) Professors and assistant professors of the department carry out serious researches of building constructions taking into account global experience in the field of designing buildings and constructions. During 5 years 140 copyright certificates on inventions and patents were received by the staff of the department according to the results of their scientific researches. Over 15 monographic and about 600 publications in various scientific articles and magazines, including 10 textbooks in Kazakh and Russian, 12 teaching aids, 150 scientific articles were published. 10 scientific and practical conferences, including 5 international conferences were organised. Professors of the department have participated in six international and eight republican conferences. The largest scientific and educational centres MSU named after Lomonosov, MSBU, MARU, CNIJSK named after Kucherenko, KazGU, KazNTU influenced greatly on the formation and development of the department.
Extracurricular activities. The department of General Construction is proud of its graduates, many of them nowadays occupy high positions both in governmental, and in non-governmental structures. They are heads of large companies, and scientific research institutes, and recognized scientists in Kazakhstan and abroad. Among them – Kulibayev A.A. — president JV "sary Arka”, presidents (general directors) of companies: Belovich A.J. («Basis» corp.), Kalmurzin K.T. (JV «Almatystroyinvest»), Bektemisov M.J. (JV «Almatypromstroy»), Kerejbaev S.B. («Almatykultbytstroy»), Batalov R.A. («Raymbek»), Tatygulov A.S. («KazGOR»), Ashimbaev A.K. («KazNIISSA»). Students have practical training both at the enterprises and Academy. Senior students have practical training in some big building companies, and scientific research institutes, such as «Almatykurylys», «Almatygorstroy», «Elitstroy», «Basis», «Kuat», «Kazstroyservice», «Civil Engineering Corporation», «Almatykultbytstroy», «Reiz», «KazGOR», «KazNIISSA», «Almatygiprogor», «Karagay», «AZTM», Almaty furniture factory, «Imstalkon», «Almatymonolitstroy», etc.. At the department there is a student design bureau, laboratory of seismic resistant constructions where large projects are researched and carried out. Complex of Academy and college buildings are being designed with the help of senior students and teaching staff. In 2005 the research project of the student Ismailov N.M., under the supervision of academic professor Baitursunov D.M. was awarded a third degree diploma at the competition of graduation papers in Russia. In 2005 diploma project of the student Ismailov N.M.., under the supervision of the professor Bubnovich E.V. confer a decoration diploma III degree at the Russian contest best diploma of work and at the same time Ismailov N.M. award Diploma I-degree Education & Science ministry of Republic of Kazakhstan for science work. In 2009 diploma project of the student Auelbekov "Universal multifunctional center with metal-tent coverings” under the supervision of professor Baytursynov D.M won the 2nd place at the international competition which was held at the University Malters in Stambul, Turkey. The Fund of the museum and archieves of AVAAS (Association of graduates of architectural and civil engineering specialities) are supplemented and renewed with reference materials.
The international activity. The Department of general construction has extensive links with many high educational establishments and enterprises of Kazakhstan and abroad, has extensive relations with branches and scientific research institutes, the organizations, the enterprises, particularly: KazNIISSA, NPO VNIIstroydormash, NPOVNIIzemmash, ZNIIIS, MGSU (former MISI), OGASA, KISI, PGASA, SibADU, MADI, PA «KazGOR», SC «Kazmontazhstroy» and others. During the period from 1960 till 1980 well-known scientists, doctors of technical sciences, professors, such as: Gvozdev A.A., Krylov S.M., Barashikov A.J., Baykov В. Н, Korf M., Zhunusov T.Z. lectured at the Department. The staff of the department established scientific relations with the leading scientists of Russia: doctor of physics & mathematics Dyomin В. Т., professor of the Chair of theoretical mechanics of Moscow State University; Leontjev N.N. — doctor of physics, professor of MISI, professors of MISI — doctors of physics Korenev B.G. and Klein T.K, doctor of physics, professor Rozin L.A. — Head of the Chair of MPU. Member of Kazakh Academy of Sciences, doctor of physics and mathematics, professor Sapa V.A. — Head of the Chair of theoretical mechanics of KazNU. The staff of the department has international links with other research and higher educational institutions. For example, academic professor Baitursunov D.M. has established links with doctor of physics, professor of PGISU Kruglov J.P., Head of the Chair «Building Constructions» Bondarenko E.I., Head of the Chair «Building Constructions» of MISI professor Afanasjev A.A. Associated professor Besimbaev E.T. has links with professor of the Chair «Mechanics of a soil and foundation” Ter-Martirosjan Z.G. of MGISU, the President of the International Institute of Geotechnics and Geomechanics, in Moscow, doctor of physics, professor Zaretsky J.K., the vice-rector on science of the Tashkent Polytechnical University doctor of physics, professor Madjidov I. А. Associated professor Bakirov K.K. has links with the Head of Laboratory NIIZB in Moscow, doctor of physics, Professor Chistyakov E.A.
Achievements and awards. Kuzyutin A.D was awarded with an order „Friendship Among Nations“, medals „For distinguished labour“, badges for „Excellence in Education of USSR“, „Excellence in High Education of RK“; Ospanov S.O. for achievements in science was awarded a diploma of VDNH of KazSSR and Ministry of Education of KazSSR, Akimat of Almaty, medal for development of virgin lands and anniversary medal „For honoured labour“; Abishev А. К. – honoured civil engineer of RK, was awarded a diploma of the Ministry of Education and Science of RK and Association of civil engineers of RK; Kashkynbayev I.Z – was awarded three diplomas of VDNH of KazSSR and Association of civil engineers of RK; Bakyrov K.K. was awarded a diploma of the Supreme Council of KazSSR; Nauryzbayev K.A was awarded a diploma of the Ministry of Education and Science of RK and Association of civil engineers of Kazakhstan; Maulenov Zh.K., was awarded honoured diplomas of akim of Almaty and AHK „Almaty kurulys“. Homyakov V.A. was awarded a diploma of the Association of civil engineers of RK; Besimbayev E. T. was awarded honoured diploma of the Ministry of Education and Science of RK and akim of Almaty. Baitursunov D. M. — was awarded a diploma of the MES of RK, honoured diploma and letter of thanks of Association of civil engineers of Kazakhstan, with medal named after A.Baitursunov for publishing books and monographs on the following theme „New Constructions and Buildings“, the owner of the state grant of MES of RK in 2006 »The best teacher of higher educational establishment", the winner of competition «The best scientist of KazGASA»; Muhamedshakirov Y.A. was awarded a diploma of Association of civil engineers of RK, Azhgalyeva B.A. was awarded a diploma of the Ministry of Education and Science of RK. Our Department takes an active part in sport life of KazGASA. In 1970–71 years volleyball team of the Department won twice the championship of KazSSR among higher educational establishments. Competitions on volleyball, chess etc. among veterans are held annually.
