The number of chairs was growing all the time: the chair "Architecture of residential and public buildings” was opened in 1968 (professor and honored architect of Kazakh SSR R.A. Seidalin was a head of the department); the chair "The history of architecture and architectural constructions” was opened in 1972 (honored architect M.M. Mendikulov was a head of the department). Then, the chair "Drawing” was opened in 1977 (national artist Kenbaev M.S. was a head of the department) and the chair "Painting and Sculpture” under the head of national artist Nauryzbaev H.N. was opened in 1980.

The chair «Basis of architectural design” was opened in 1980 after the foundation of Almaty institute of architecture and civil engineering on the basis of architectural and construction departments of KazPTI (candidate of architecture, professor Abilov A.Zh. was a head of the department).

In 1992 Almaty institute of architecture and civil engineering (АIACE) was renamed into Kazakh state academy of architecture and civil engineering (KSAACE). The chair „Design of the architectural environment“ was opened in 1992 (candidate of architecture, professor Bahmutov J. I. was a head of the department). In 2001 Kazakh state academy of architecture and civil engineering (KSAACE) was renamed into Kazakh leading academy of architecture and civil engineering (KLAACE). The department of design was separated from structure of the department of architecture in 2005.

A.D. Kuzyutin, U. V. Kruglov, B.A. Glaudinov, S. R. Bukeikhanov, M.I. Lesovichenko, B.H. Shakerbai, J.I. Bahmutov, A. Zh. Abilov, G.K.Sadvakasov, B.A. Glaudinov, K. G. Zhumartova worked as the deans of the department of architecture from the date of its foundation. Nowadays, academic professor, the first doctor of architecture and honored scholar of the republic of Kazakhstan B.A.Glaudinov is a dean of the department.

High school of architecture must prepare specialists with a broad outlook, clearly representing problems and prospects of the future activity. They must have a high standard of knowledge and creative skills and be capable to specialize in any field of architecture. The organization of architects’ preparation is closely connected with rational selection of educational information content that directed to architectural designing as a main discipline of architectural education.

Specialized council of dissertation protection on the competition of candidate of architecture academic degree was opened at first in KazLAACE. It consists of 12 leading scientists of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzia and Uzbekistan. The protection of dissertations is on specialty 18.00.01 »Theory and history of architecture, restoration and reconstruction of historical and architectural heritage”. The first applicants G.S. Abdrasilova (KazLAACE) and N.A. Chernysh (Kazakh University of Agriculture in Astana) protected successfully their dissertations in July, in 2002. Complex council of scientists, which takes into account dissertation protection on the competition of Doctor of architecture, was created in December, in 2004. The opening of specialized councils of candidate and doctoral dissertation gives possibilities for further growth potential of academy and republic in the field of architecture and town planning.

Specialities of the department:

— specialty «Architecture of residential and public buildings» is a complex preparation in the field of designing of buildings and constructions, including not only architectural and artistic aspects and also engineering problems.

— specialty «Town planning” is a preparation in the field of planning of inhabited places, town planning reconstruction, town building ecology — research, design, management, examination and realization.

— specialty „Landscape architecture“ is a landscape designing of national parks and objects of landscape architecture in the structure of settlements: parks, gardens, public gardens, avenues, pedestrian zones, quays, local landscape formations in the structure of architectural objects.

— specialty „Reconstruction and restoration of architectural monuments” is to study, restore and preserve the monuments of art of building, historical and cultural monuments.

At present, the department of architecture of KazLAACE is well-established architectural school, well known outside of Kazakhstan. The authority of the department based on its graduates’ successes and scientific and pedagogical potential of teachers.

Architects-teachers of AIACE-KazLAACE always tend to be fully educated. At present, there was a whole pleiad of doctors of architecture from the graduates of the department of architecture of KazPTI-AIACE-KazLAACE, A.Zh. Abilov was the first graduate of the department of architecture of KazPTI in 1970.

Among the universities of the Republic of Kazakhstan credit education technology at high level (2001) of education was introduced for the first time in Academy, international and republican conferences and seminars always takes place.

- the best students have their introductory and practical training for students in foreign countries (since 2007) (United Arab Emirates, Egypt and China).

- students’ free residence in a student house.

- AIACE-KazLAACE association of graduates was established (2005)

In October in 2007 the commission of international union of architects (IUA) -UNESCO, under the chairman of the president of Russian academy of architecture and construction sciences, the President of Moscow Institute of architecture (state academy), doctor of architecture and professor Kudriavtsev A.P., was working in the department of architecture for international accreditation of the specialty 050420 “Architecture» bachelor. KazLAACE was the first among Central Asian and South –East Asian countries where the specialty — 050420 "Architecture" received international education program accreditation in Barcelona (Spain) in the headquarter of (UIA) -UNESCO at the meeting of commission in 08.11.2007. It means that graduation diploma of the Department of Architecture in KazLAACE will be recognized more than in ten countries that have accreditation in IUA- UNESCO.

Modern computer graphic programs are used in educational process of the Department of Architecture. The lessons are taught in Kazakh, Russian languages. Such disciplines as «Landscape architecture» and «Architectural composition» are taught in English.

Now the department of Architecture has 12 branches (LtdCompany PI «Almatygiprogor-1», joint-stock company Academy «Каzgor», Center of town-planning project of Ltd Company «Urbostyle», joint-stock company PF «Grado», LtdCompany Kazgipograd and others) where lessons and practice takes place.

Competitively capable students express desire to protect diploma projects in foreign language. In 2005–2006 academic year, 5 graduates protected their diploma projects in English and French, got «excellent» marks having chance to receive the diploma of international sample.

The main leading architectural and designing firms are the branches of the department.

About 60 credits of academic hours are annually given to these branches: diploma design, course design and educational design and pre-diploma practice management.

Leading architects of the Republic of Кazakhstan are invited to the department for being the chairmen of SAC at the protection of diploma projects: in 2001–2004 the laureate of State premium of USSR and the academician of International academy of architecture A.K. Kapanov, in 2007–2008 the outstanding architect, the laureate of State premium of the RК and independent premium «Tarlan», the academician of International academy of architects, the President of international fund «Abylai-khan» and honored architect of R. К S.E.Valihanov, in 2008–2009 and 2009–2010 outstanding architect of the RK and honored architect of KazLAACE and the director of Ltd Company «Urbostyle» L.V. Nysanbaeva, in 2009–2010 the outstanding architect of the RК A.S.Chikanaev. In 2004 students of the department of architecture won the tender for designing «Business Centre in Almaty». The firm «Аrline» declared the tender. It was great prize fund (5 000 US dollars) and donative gift — 10 new generation computers.

The number of the diploma projects, recommended by SAC for the participation at foreign competitions is annually growing:

Dubrovnik (Yugoslavia) — 2 projects (2006–2007). Projects were the best top ten.

Pedagogical and scientific potential.

Nowadays the head of the Department is doctor, academic professor B.A.Glaudinov.

Faculty staff: academic professor, candidate of architecture G.M.Kissamedin, G.K.Sadvokassova; honoured professor M.R.Izbasar; associate professor, candidate of architecture B.T.Balykbayev; candidate of architecture, associate professsors M.B.Glaudinova, Kozbagarova N.Zh. defended their doctor theses in 2010, associate professor G.A.Novikova; candidate of technical sciences, associate professor Sh.A.Muhamedshakirova, associate professor, candidate of ped.sciences G.G.Shaprova; associate professor K.G.Zhomartova; associate professor J.P.Samarkin, associate professor. candidate of architecture A.K.Tuyakova.

Among the faculty staff there are 6 doctors, 5 – staff members, 9 candidates of sciences, 9- staff members;

Improvement of teaching quality promotes carrying out of international master classes. At the 19–20^th of March 2008 master class "Environmentally friendly

house” was carried out within the framework of British Council. Master class was conducted under guidance of professor, architect from Edinburgh S.Roaf. We organized the presentation of the book "Modern city: architecture and ecology” by President of British Council K. Baskser and S.Roaf. Master class "Almaty center and its identity” was conducted by the students and professors of two educational establishments: University of Erfurt and KazGASA in May 2006. The outcomes were discussed at the Department and certificates were awarded.

There are 17 postgraduates, 1001 full-time and 110 part-time students. For the last 3 years 4 students studied at the University of applied sciences (Erfurt, Germany).

1 student was trained in Florence (Ramualdo de Bianko Foundation, Italy 2008–2009).

999 students were awarded scholarships of the President of KazGASA.

Innovative methods of teaching

-Lectures with the usage of PP-90

-Incorporation of the experiment on teaching architectural planning methodology on the basis of European schools. Assestment procedure of projects was carried out at the Project Institute branch of DA «Almatygyprogor 1”.Results –assestment of projects and getting of diplomas November 12^th 2009.

-Incorporation of defendance of Diploma projects before GAK at the enterprise:

»Almatygyprogor 1” and JSC "Urobostyle”.

-Result — 1 project was nominated for Aga-Khan prize, 17 for participation at the international competition.

АExtracurricular activities

Students and faculty staff participate in the sport events of the academy. Team of DA often gets prizes on basketball, tennis, volleyball, and chess. Students of DA are active participants of amateur art festivals. Following events as "Miss KazGASA’, Spring in KazGASA”, "Zhigit Sultany” etc. are held annually.

There are gym, stadium, reading – rooms, computer classes for the students’ effective use of leisure time. In the Students’ House there are also reading – rooms and computer classes where they work until 22.00 p.m.

We also organize contests and exhibitions of Student Works.

International relations and cooperation

Summer introductory practice with architectural monuments in Beijing under the guidance of doctor of architecture B.A.Glaudinov and assist. prof. A.S. Espenbet.

Since 16.08.2010 until 30.08.2010 an agreement on mutual cooperation was signed for the participation of our students in international students competition of projects "Reconstruction of a traditional fish market Dzhagalchi in Pusan” organized by "BIACF – Bussan International Architectural Culture Festival” based on Kyungsung University in the framework BUSSAN INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN WORKSHOP, as well an arrangement on students exchange and internships, scientific cooperation.

Most of our graduates become highly qualified specialists in the sphere of architecture.
