Department of architecture was founded in 1966 within the confines of Kazakh Polytechnic Institute on the basis of the departments of “Town planning” and “Draft geometry”. Core of formed department was “Town planning” founded by honoured builder of Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic, candidate of architecture Bassenov T.K

The first release of the experts - architects of a set 1961-1962 were held in 1966-1967 academic year of foundation. On that time at the department worked Bassenov T.K, Seidalin R.A, Kenbayev M.S, Beloscerkovski I.I, Naurizbayev H.E, Tumanyan U.B, Glaudinov B.A, Usachev P.D, Mambeev S.A, Altaibayeva, Izbasarova M.R and other staff of teachers. Majority of them were graduates of leading Moscow and Leningrad High Schools.

Since the day of foundation dean’s duties of department of Architecture took up Kiutiuzin A.D, Kruglov U.V, Bukeikhanov S.R, Lesovichenko M.I, Shakerbay B.H, Bakhmutov U.I, Abilov A. Zh and Glaudinov B.A. Today the dean of department is a candidate of architecture, academic professor Sadvokasova G.K.

Quantity of departments regularly increased: in 1968 was opened “Architecture of residential and public building” under the leadership of honored architect of Kazakh Soviet Sodalist Republic, candidate of architecture Seidalina R.A; in 1972 was opened a department of “History of Architecture and architectural constructions”, which headed by honored architect of Kazakh Soviet Sodalist Republic, candidate of architecture Mendikulov M.M. After that under leadership of national painter KazSSR Kenbayev M.S was organized a department of “Painting”, and a department of “Painting and Sculpture” was organized by the national painter KazSSR Naurizbayeva H.E.

After forming of AACI (Almaty Architectural Construction Institute) in 1980 was opened a department of “Basis of architectural designing” headed by doctor of architecture, professor Abilov A.Zh.

With the forming of KazGASA (KazLAACE) in 1994 was linked with opening in 1995 a department of “Design of architectural environment” under leadership of candidate of architecture, Professor Bakhmutova U.I.

In 2005 the department of design was formed from the staff of the department of architecture.

Today department of architecture of KazGASA presents assemble of architectural school, rather well-known outside of Kazakhstan. It’s authority bases on successes of graduates of faculty and scientific – pedagogical potential of the teachers. Many graduates of department quickly adapted in a sphere of architectural practice and became the highly skilled experts, authors of well-known in republic and abroad architectural objects, such as assemble of building on the square of Republic, Republic House of Officers, Palace of Culture, Palace of pupils and others.

Among well-known names of the graduaters of department Anchugov A.E is honored architect of KazSSR; Baimagambetov S.K is the main architect Almaty city; Eraliev T.E is a honored architect of KazSSR; Martemiyanov S.N is a laureate premium of Lenin’s Komsomol; Montakhaev K.Zh is a laureate of State premium of SSSR, national architect of SSSR; Rustembekov A.I is a president of the Union Architect’s of Kazakhstan; Suleimenov is a honoured worker of Culture of Kazakhstan; Fazilov S.A is a laureate of premium Council of Ministers of KazSSR and others.

Today department of architecture disposes 12 subsidiaries on a base which carries out studies and practices (LTD “Almatygyprogor-1”, AO PI “Kazgor”, AS“Corporation KUAT”, “Center of town- planning’, LTD “Urbostyle”, LTD “Kapshagai – Saulet”, CAS “Almatygorstroy”, and etc.

Experiment of approaching teaching to real architectural activities continued in 2004-2005 academic year, when to one of subsidiary was given a discipline “Designed affairs”-sole proprietorship “Iumakaev”, on other discipline “Work designing” to “Interinproekt”. Disciplines from an academic educational lecture hall proceeded to designed bureau, where students during semester in a volume of 2 credits on practice perform what previously had said at High School.

The next stage of integral teaching is “Academy and Manufacture” organized for more successful students were delivery of discipline “Diploma designing” to prominent planning organizations and to studios of famous architect’s.

The result of cooperation of manufacture and High school was a success of student of KazGASA in 2001, which wan a prize of Committee of architecture and construction 1 million tenge for elaboration of project “School of general education” and practical realization. Laureate of competition became a student of KazGASA, at that time the department of “Architecture of residential and public buildings” Andreev D.F, who also worked and studied on model of integral teaching in a prominent project institute AS “KazGOR”.

Creating integral educational and informational sphere, where a process of teaching directly concerned with manufacture and getting fundamental knowledge, with utilization on manufacture supplied elaborations of new techniques and technology, carrying out of experimental researches, student and experienced practical man contributes to realizations proclaimed by the Chief of State principle of priority of developing knowledge in a line of creation innovational economics.

In educational processes are used modern computer graphic programs. Teaching is carried on state, Russian languages and on separate disciplines studies are carried on English language. (“Landscape architecture”, “Architectural composition”).

Competitive students express wishes for defending diploma’s projects on foreign language. In 2005-2006 academic years defended diplomas on an English and French language on marks “excellent” for diplomas of international standard 5 students engaged on degree thesis.

Chairmen State Accreditation Committee on defending diplomas of faculty are invited leading native and foreign specialists: in 2000-2001 was invited the dean of faculty of architecture of Kyrgyz-Russian (Slavonic) University, doctor of architecture, professor Muksinov R.M and in 2001-2004- laureate State premium of SSSR, Academic of International academy of architecture Kapanov A.K.

Carrying out of defending diplomas projects in towns akimats of cities Almaty and Kapshagai became a tradition. Several diplomas projects were awarded with a deed of Akims the cities, constructional companies and public organizations.

Pedagogical and scientific potential.

In 2006-2007 academic year contingent of scientific – pedagogical specialists consist of 30 people with post-graduate students, masters, including academy’s professors: the dean and candidate of architecture Sadvokasova G.K; candidate of architecture Glaudinov B.A, candidate of architecture Kisamedin G.M; associate professors: candidate of architecture Kakoryn V.D; doctor of architecture Baitenov E.M; candidate of architecture Balikbayev B.T, candidate of technical sciences Mukhmedshakirova Sh.A; candidate of architecture Kozbagarova N.Zh; candidate of pedagogical science Shaprova G.G and honoured professor Izbasar M.R.

On faculty are working 13 assistant professors: Samarkyn U.P; Brilova L.S; Espenbet A,S; Zhurkabayeva A.B; Karpykova D.S; Mamyrbayev K.M: Mantaridy O.V; headmaster of colledge Novikova G.A; Reshetnev M.I; Risbekov S.S; Toishibekova A.T; Priemesc O.N.

On faculty are being taught more than 10 post- graduate students and 10 magistres and is working office-manager on working with students Darmenova A.Zh.

More than 600 students study at the full and part time departments and 13 students get scholarships, 3 students won grant “Bolashak”. 15 students study abroad –possessors sponsors’ grant of corporation “Kuat”, “Basis” “Rakhat”, Akimat of Almaty region.

Scientific research work

Main directions of scientific investigations on specialty “Architecture” are researches in a sphere of history and architecture of residential and public buildings, town planning formation and architectural-landscape objects of Kazakhstan. The results of scientific researches of PTU are regularly published in “Vestnik of KazGASA”, Republican magazine of architecture “Kumbez” and are reported on International scientific – methodological conferences. In 2005-2006 academic year were published 40 scientific articles.

Teachers, masters and post-graduate students took an active part in work of an international scientific – practical conference: “Architecture- constructional education in 21 century”. “Bolongnas declaration and role of specialists in a stable development of towns”, “August’s reading 2006”, “Large-scale towns in postsoviet space: problems of centers and identity” and others.

Specialists of the department actively take part in an international and republic scientific-methodological conferences. The results of scientific-research works by students are reported at an annual Republic Student’s conference of KazGASA.

All students’ reports are accompanied with videopresentations.

Within the confines of KazGASA for the first time in Kazakhstan was opened Soviet on defending thesis on conferring scholarly degree of candidate of architecture. Structure of its comprises 12 leading scientists of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzia and Uzbekistan. Defending of thesis’s carried out on specialties 18.00.01- “Theory and history of architecture, restoration of historic- architectural legacy”. In succeeding years within the confines of KazGASA defended 9 competitors (7 for conferring scholarly degree of candidate of architecture and 2 for doctors of science).

Faculty exhibits its achievements on an annual exhibition “Atakent-EXPO”, “Town-planning forum” where represents the best students works on architectural- designing projection, painting and drawing.

In 2004 students architectural department won a tender for designing “Business- centre of Almaty”, announced by a firm “Arline” with grand prize fund (5 000 $ USA with complementary present -10 computers of a new generation)

In 2006 4^th and 5^th students courses took part in competition on designing project of garden “Territory of love” which was held by Akimat of Almaty and enterprising group “Edelveis”.

In 2006 on International show – contest of the best diplomas projects on specialty “Architecture” in Tomsk (MAPASH –Russia) 6 diplomas projects were distinguished.

Within the confines of KazGASA since 2003-2004 academic years carries out international show –contest of the best diplomas projects with participation of architectural schools of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzia, Uzbekistan. In 2006-2007 academic year was held international show-contest of diplomas, devoted to 45^th anniversary of department of architecture.

There is master class which increases quality of education of students of the department of architecture. In May 2006 master class on the theme “Almaty center and its identity” was held by the students and professors of both educational staff of Erfurts University and KazGASA. The results of created work were reported on the department and pointed out by certification.

International activity

Professors Glaudinov B.A, Kisamedyn G.M and Kozbagarova N.Zh took part in a work of 1^st Florentine show – contest of the best diplomas projects, organized by fund Romualdo del Bianko on specialty “Architecture” in 2003 (Italy).

On the 2^nd Florentine show-contest of the best diplomas projects (in 2005) from the department of architecture were represented 2 diplomas projects on specialization “Town planning” which were settled out by funds certificates of Romualdo del Bianko. In according of setting of creative contacts with Berlin Technical University 3 students from Germany passed prediploma practice on gathering materials for diplomas designing on architecture in Almaty.

During 2000-2006 in KazGASA for reading lectures were invited well-known architect Kisho Kurakava (Japan); architect-trainee, professor from Canada Masa Nafucho; architect Didie Bro from well-known French architect Zh. Nouvelle’s (France) studio; professor of Smolensk University (Russia) Ezau N.V.

In 2005-2006 academic year group of student of architectural department under leadership of professor Kisamedyn G.M and Sadvokasova G.K passed project practice in Arabian Emirates (city Dubai, Abu Dabi, Shardzhi, Aleina) were introduced with a unique objects of architecture, visited a new standing objects, marble factory, project bureau, construction company “AUBKO”.

In 2005 academic year professor Kissamedyn G.M became a laureate of State fund of Ministry of education and science of the Republic of Kazakhstan in nomination “The best teacher of a year” in according of realization of programs she visited and established creative contacts with architectural departments of the USA, CNR, France, Arabian Emirates. Professor Kisamedyn G.M introduced with organization of educational processes, methods of teaching, organization and passing defending diplomas projects. Abroad trips let to gather materials about modern architecture of Arabian Emirates and CNR, France, USA, which are used on architectural specialty.

Extracurricular work

Students and teachers of architectural department actively take part in cultural events: a team of architectural department won prizes in basketball, volleyball, tennis and chess.

Department’s students are active participaters of amateur art and performance. In 2006 the team of department won the 2^nd place in a contest “Spring in KazGASA”. “Devotion to students” and most popular contest for students “The best student’s family” “Miss beauty” and others are held annually for 1^st year students.

For effective using student’s free time are afforded an opportunity to use sport hall, stadium, reading hall, computer classes.
